Hey, I'm Alex, and welcome to my site! If you’re here, you likely already know my business name by now, but just in case ya don’t, I’m the owner of Signs of our Lives. Whether you're looking for tips, insights, or just some inspiration, I’m excited to share my journey and connect with you! I plan to dedicate this page to sharing events, projects, and collaborations.
But before loading you up with a bunch of informative and fun blog posts, I first thought that I’d introduce myself and tell you a bit about me, and how I got started.
Where It All Began
In 2016, peak-Pinterest-wedding-era, I was convinced I needed to address my own wedding envelopes with hand done calligraphy. Why I thought this? No idea, but I sure am grateful that I did! Anyways, this DIY-girly was on a mission. So I did some Googling and found a pointed pen calligraphy workshop in D.C., convinced my mom to join me, and so it all began!
After coming home from work each night for an entire two weeks to hand address the envelopes, I also decided that I wanted to take my new calligraphy skills to more mediums. Insert: chalkboards. After absolutely zero Google searches, zero sketches, and zero measuring (all things I probably should've done), I lettered on my first chalkboards (also for my wedding). They included a welcome sign, cards and gifts sign, and a couple more cliché wedding signs. I also snuck in a hand painted “better together” wood sign. Thankfully though, I wasn’t ambitious enough to do a hand lettered seating chart - I absolutely just downloaded a pretty font and printed that shit out.
Fast forward after a year or so of creating wedding signs for a few friends and family members, I realized I wanted to pursue calligraphy and lettering as more than just a hobby. I was teaching elementary school at the time, and apparently needed more things to do with my time other than relax.
A couple years later, my partner and I moved to LA and then to San Diego! After 3 years in Southern California (with one pandemic in between), I had built up my clientele enough to take my business full time, and haven’t looked back since.
I'm so grateful every day for this amazing job, where I get to create art and serve others through the services I offer. Thank you endlessly for your support!
